What is Restoration and Reconditioning? All the typewriters available for sale at Colombo Collection are professionally reconditioned and restored to ultimate functionality unless otherwise stated as serviced.
So how do we do it? First, we disassemble the typewriter including the body and the platen from the carriage and place the typewriter into an ultra-sonic cleaning tank to degrease the machine removing gunk, grime, oil, and any dirt. All typewriters go through a careful drying process before moving to the restoration stage. Next, all the pieces are reviewed for damage or corrosion, and treated or replaced as needed. Keys and hammers are straightened, and their alignments corrected. Then all the metals are chemically cleaned and polished. All rubber components are replaced, and the platen and feed rollers are refurbished or replaced as needed. We treat and repair the plastic components as necessary, and rubbing compounds are used to remove scratches on the machine before it is resurfaced and polished. As for the exterior, if left original, your typewriter is cleaned, treated, buffed and polished. If it’s a restored, painted piece, the body is cleaned, sanded, degreased, primed, painted with new paint then dried and polished. The typewriter is tested throughout the process, and once the machine is reassembled, it goes through a lengthy Final Quality Assurance testing that is over 30 minutes of continuous typing, and a complete alignment and functions check—any final adjustments are made at this time.
With a reconditioned typewriter from Colombo Collection, you can rest assured that you have invested in a quality typewriter that has been fully tested and restored to provide many years of reliable service!
